Care Quality Commission

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS foundation Trust (WWL) is pleased to announce that following a recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection, every service and location is now rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’, the two highest ratings.

WWL has maintained ‘Good’ overall for every domain: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-Led following the inspection in October last year when three core services were scrutinised - surgery at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Leigh Infirmary and Wrightington Hospital, critical care at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary (RAEI) and maternity services at RAEI and Leigh Infirmary.

In its report, the CQC noted that WWL’s Maternity services had improved in three of the five domains (safe, effective and well-led) from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’ and is now rated ‘Good’ overall, an improvement from the 2017 CQC inspection. In particular saying: “The service had made improvements in the areas we said it must take action at our last inspection”.

The report highlighted that Trust staff treated patients with compassion and kindness, respected their privacy and dignity, and took account of their individual needs. It also highlighted that WWL treated concerns and complaints seriously, included patients in the investigation of their complaint and shared lessons learned with all staff.

It notes that leaders and staff were patient focussed and proud to work for the Trust and that WWL had a culture of openness and honesty with processes to support people speaking up. The CQC also highlighted our active and enthusiastic group of 28 governors made up of members of the public, members of staff and representatives from public organisations or NHS partners.

Inevitably, the inspection did identify some areas for improvement and the Trust is committed to addressing the concerns highlights, with action plans are already in place.

Trust Chairman, Robert Armstrong said: “I am really pleased to see that almost the entire Trust was rated as ‘outstanding’ or ‘good’. This is a great tribute to our hard working staff.”

Silas Nicholls, Trust Chief Executive said: “The Board was pleased to see that the CQC rated all of our services as either ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ and we truly believe that this is a reflection of all the hard work, dedication and quality of care our staff provides every day.

“We will continue on our improvement journey to be outstanding in everything that we do and work together to ensure that our patients and community continue to receive the best possible care.”
