Neonatal Unit Receives Kind Donation of Seven New Nanny Mattresses

We are incredibly grateful to Mr Gary Jones, a member of our local community who has kindly donated seven Nanny Mattresses to our Neonatal Unit at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

Gary runs the local martial arts club, Inspire Taekwondo Wigan, and is neighbours with Justine and Oliver Walls, a local couple whose baby daughter sadly passed away earlier this year.

In memory of their daughter, Justine and Oliver, along with Gary, decided to organise a kickathon to try and raise money for the Neonatal Unit.

Gary set a challenge for his students to perform a number of kicks in a set amount of time with the target of raising around £500.

The students all embraced the challenge and through the generosity of those who sponsored the kickathon, Gary and his students were able to raise an amazing £930 in total.

From there, Gary spoke with the Neonatal Team who decided that the money should be used to purchase seven Nanny Mattresses which are used to monitor a baby’s breathing whilst they are on the Unit. If a baby has any problems breathing, the mattress sets off an alarm to notify staff.

Gary delivered the mattresses to the Unit on what was an emotional occasion for both him and Neonatal colleagues. We are incredibly grateful to Gary, the Walls family, the students and their sponsors, for their incredible generosity!
