Volunteering is an enriching and rewarding experience, helping to improve the lives of others and giving something back to the community. It also provides volunteers with the opportunity to meet new people and make friends, whilst gaining new experiences and skills.
Our team of 300 Volunteers are an invaluable asset to our Trust and recently joining the family is 91-year-old Hilda, who retired in 1997, after being a Medical Secretary for 20 years at Billinge Hospital. Hilda wanted to get back into a routine, as she has always liked keeping herself busy. During her retirement, Hilda spent time on holidays, in the garden, doing up her house with her husband, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Hilda said: “I always like to keep busy, otherwise I just get bored.”
Born in 1933, Hilda was looking for volunteering opportunities within her local area and noticed that a Help Desk Volunteer role came up at Wrightington Hospital. She enquired and was able to start training just before Christmas 2024. Hilda volunteers four hours a week, helping patients and visitors, directing them to the place that they need to be, collecting wheelchairs and bringing them back to their correct location, and helping with any other queries they may have.
Hilda continued: “I love it here. It’s so interesting and nice to see new faces. I feel useful as well and this volunteering role gives me energy. I will continue for as long as I can.”
