Mr Mathai was appointed Substantive Consultant in Ophthalmology in December 2016.
He obtained his basic medical qualifications from Kasturba Medical College, India in 1987 and completed a Masters in Opthalmology from the same institution in 1990.
He commenced further training in the UK in 1992, completing his Fellowship in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Edinburgh in 1995.
He joined WWL in 2001 as Locum Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and was with the Trust until 2003. He then returned to India, as a Consultant at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore from 2003 to 2009, before rejoining WWL in 2009.
He holds general clinics and specialist glaucoma clinics both at Wigan and Leigh and is involved in the screening, diagnosis and treatment of diabetic eye disease. Complex problems are discussed at MDT meetings. He performs laser treatment for diabetic retinal problems.
Mr Mathai peforms cataract and glaucoma surgeries, in addition to lid surgeries of moderate complexity. His surgical results have been audited and match the National standards in visual outcomes and in complication rates.
He is a member of several professional bodies including the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCO), United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (UKISCRS) and British Society of Refractive Surgeons (BSRS).
