OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Hospital Specialist Supportive & Palliative Care team based at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, although we see patients at each of the Trust’s sites. The team operates a 7-day service between 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday including Saturday, Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust Cancer Services is part of the Northwest Cancer Services Network. The Trust Specialist Palliative Care Service sits alongside this and is underpinned by multidisciplinary team working.
The aim of the Hospital Macmillan Specialist Supportive and Palliative Care service is to play a pivotal role in clinical decisions regarding the care of our patients, whilst working collaboratively with other members of the team.
- What we do
The Supportive and Palliative Care team accepts referrals for patients with progressive life-threatening illness of any aetiology, with at least one of the following:
- Pain and Symptom Management
- End of Life Care for all patients
- Rapid Discharge from hospital.
- Advanced Care Planning
- In Reach to the emergency floors offering timely palliative care review.
- Complex Psychological/Emotional issues (Patient/Carer)
- Complex clinical or ethical decision making
- Provide education
- Collaborative working with other teams.

We can offer a face to face, telephone or video consultation.
We hold a medical led outpatients’ clinic on a Tuesday and Friday morning based at the cancer care centre at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. The nurse led outpatient’s clinic is also based on cancer care centre on a Tuesday afternoon.
In addition to these a Palliative Care Nurse and Palliative Consultant have a joint interstitial lung disease clinic with the respiratory team which is held every Monday afternoon.
There is also a weekly multidisciplinary team meeting on a Wednesday morning, which includes members of the extended team, such as the hospital chaplain, district nurse liaison and physiotherapist. Patient care is discussed in this meeting in order for them to receive care that is tailored to suit their individual needs.
- How Is the Service Accessed?
Patients can be referred to the Supportive & Palliative Care Team by any professional, providing patient consent has been obtained.
