Cellular Pathology

• About Us

  The Cellular Pathology department examines tissue specimens from patients, taken during either surgical operations or post-mortem examination. Examinations of the tissues and organs are made to determine a diagnosis and provide information on further treatment. This is done by looking for abnormal features in tissue cells.

  Tissue is processed and embedded in a paraffin wax block. From this block, very thin tissue sections are cut and stained, so that cellular structures and details can be visualised microscopically. The sections are examined by a histopathologist.

  In September 2012, the laboratory merged with Salford Royal, to become part of the new PAWS (Pathology at Wigan & Salford) Pathology service. The new combined department is committed to providing the same high quality, cost effective service to patients and service users from both trusts.

  Cellular Pathology consists of the following related services:

  • Histopathology
  • Dermatopathology
  • Neuropathology
  • Non-gynaecological cytology
  • Immunohistochemistry, FISH testing and electron microscopy
  • Frozen sections
• Results

  Unfortunately the department cannot issue reports or results directly to patients. Any queries about results should come to the department via your clinician e.g. GP surgery, hospital consultant, specialist nurse or other healthcare professional.
