Musculoskeletal Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service

• About Us

  The Musculoskeletal Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service (MSK CATS) is based over 3 sites across the Wigan borough (Wigan Health Centre, Leigh Health Centre, and Platt Bridge Health Centre)

  The team consists of Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners, Advanced Podiatry Practitioners, Orthopaedic Surgeons and Neurosurgeons.

  Clinicians within the MSK CATS service assess, diagnose, investigate and treat musculoskeletal conditions including:

  • Neck and back pain (including sciatica)
  • Osteoarthritis and joint pains
  • Soft tissue and Sports injuries
  • Nerve entrapment (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Foot conditions (e.g. bunions, shin splints and plantar fasciitis)
  • Biomechanical problems that require orthotics (e.g. insoles, braces or supports)

   

• Accessing the Service

  Patients are referred by their GP for an Orthopaedic assessment to the MSK CATS Service.

  Patients are assessed by an experienced healthcare professional with advanced assessment and diagnostic skills. This may be an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner,  Advanced Podiatry Practitioner, Orthopaedic Consultant or Neurosurgeon 

  Appointments usually last between 30-45 minutes depending on the nature of the problem. A detailed history is taken alongside a physical examination.

  Following diagnosis an appropriate treatment plan is discussed and agreed with the patient. Investigations are arranged as required.

  Treatment options may include physiotherapy, podiatry, orthotics, advice and exercises, corticosteroid injection, referral for a surgical opinion, lifestyle advice or referral to Be Well Wigan services.
