Wheelchair Services
OVERVIEW:
The Wheelchair Service provides assessment for provision of a wheelchair when clients meet the eligibility criteria. Following assessment wheelchairs will be provided to meet clinical need. The Service provides pressure relieving cushions for wheelchairs provided by Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Wheelchair Services and where pressure is clinically assessed to be a problem.
- Accessing the service
Wheelchairs are provided for patients who are:
- Registered with a borough GP or are permanent resident of the Wigan Borough
- Unable to walk indoors due to medical reasons
- Require the wheelchair for longer than six months
If a person does not met these requirements we will give other alternatives dependant on situation e.g. charities, sources of hire and private purchase.
Initial referrals have to be from a health professional, but once known to the Wheelchair Service subsequent referrals can be self referrals or from professional or carer with client consent.
