Liz and Matt - Pharmacy Apprenticeship
Matthew Orme
Pharmacy Technician Specialist: Medicines Information & Training
Liz Rimmer
Pharmacy Technician Apprentice
Matt: “Without Apprentices the Pharmacy landscape would be completely different. Every qualified Pharmacy Technician was once an apprentice and without them there would be huge pressure on Pharmacists to carry out different roles which would impact on patient care
“Apprentices are taught in several areas and have varied knowledge and skills which can be used as a valuable resource in different situations. These skills can apply to overlooked tasks, such as stock delivery or medicines top up, which ensures wards and patients receive important medicines on time, to liaising with the wider healthcare team in the treatment of patients in the intensive care unit or clinical trials for new medicines.
“We also provide apprenticeships for non-clinical based staff. They can develop dispensing skills which are used to issue the medicines for inpatients and outpatients. These apprentices are also able to receive and handle medication sent by manufacturers and maintain stock levels under guidance.
“As the Pharmacy Technician Manager for education and training, I ensure all of our apprentices have a solid foundation for their development and opportunities to improve. I find it rewarding to be part of their education and seeing them grow as people and professionals, especially when someone has progressed through the non-clinical based apprenticeship and then successfully applied for and completed the Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship.
“Our current student, Liz, has gone from strength to strength during the course and I am confident she will make an excellent Pharmacy Technician.”
Liz: “I have worked for WWL for over three years now and have worked in pharmacy services for over eight years in various roles. I have always wanted to progress up the pharmacy career ladder whilst at WWL and when an apprentice role for a Pharmacy Technician became available, I knew this was a dream job for me. I started my new apprenticeship while continuing to do my job at WWL and visiting Preston College once a week, and I have never looked back. The course is so interesting, I have learnt so much. The team at WWL are extremely helpful. I am gaining knowledge and getting a massive insight into pharmacy life as a technician. My mentor Matt is nothing but supportive as I continue through my journey and once qualified, I hope to continue my pharmacy journey with WWL. If I have any advice to give to anyone wanting to do any apprenticeship with WWL, it is just do it!"
